IMG_1768.jpg

Worcester, MA:  Wormtown Brewery will be kicking off its eleventh year by opening a new taproom Wednesday, March 17th at noon. Located at 72 Shrewsbury St Worcester, where the brewery moved to in 2015, the new 4,000 sq foot space will offer up to 14 lines of Wormtown beers, an expanded small bites menu, as well as a rotation of pop-ups in the kitchen featuring local restaurant partners. They will also hope to open a distillery in the coming months in the same location.

On Wednesday, March 17th, Wormtown will be throwing a socially distanced and limited version of their normal birthday celebration. In the past, St Patrick’s Day has been a brewery wide party that would see hundreds of visitors come through the brewery in a single day to celebrate the anniversary.  In order to safely introduce their new taproom, Wormtown will host a limited guest first come first serve 11th Birthday Celebration.

“While we can’t host our normal birthday bash this year, we are really excited to show everyone our new taproom and a small preview of the kind of events we can throw once it is safe again.” said Managing Partner David Fields.

Peppercorn’s will be on site running the first kitchen pop up throughout the opening weekend. When there is not a pop up going on, Wormtown will be partnering with Volturno Pizza, offering their full menu that can be ordered directly from your seat.

Raise a Glass to Mass During #MassBeerWeek

Statewide celebration of craft beer
Held March 6 through March 13, 2021

MBG_beerweekflyer_1-4.jpg

On Saturday, March 6,  Mass Beer Week kicks off its weeklong series of events featuring locally made beer. Breweries and restaurants have created in-person and virtual beer experiences, tastings, trivia, meal kits, and food pairing experiences to celebrate the ever-growing beer culture across the Commonwealth.

In 2007, there were just 30 breweries in Massachusetts. To date, there are 210 active breweries with an additional 20 taprooms slated to open by the end of 2021.

Commemorative Mass Beer Week glassware is also available at select tap rooms across the state. Get yours while supplied last!

Snow angels in your bathing suit?  Grab your beer-loving, inclusion-celebrating friends and family, create a team, and start fundraising! Please post your shower beer on social media, tag @exhibit.a.brewing and use the hashtags #massbeerweek #showerbeerforinclusion

Wider than the Sky is an 8% Double IPA brewed using Massachusetts-grown and malted wheat from Valley Malt, right down the road from Amherst Brewing, in Hadley. Also, the annual release of the Sugar Maple Nut Stout  -- one of the brewery’s most coveted beers -- will be released, brewed with coffee from Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters.

·       Amory’s Tomb releases Broken Latch on Thursday, March 11. A farmhouse-inspired rustic lager brewed with North East grown grain and malts from Blue Ox Malthouse, Valley Malt, and Aurora Mills & Farm. A healthy dose of earthy and spicy Czech Saaz hops provides balance against a bread and lightly toasted malt profile.

·       Join the team at Jack's Abby on Thursday, March 11 at 6 p.m. to discuss Pride and Parquet, the recently launched collaboration beer with the Boston Celtics. They’ll discuss how the partnership came together to make Jack's Abby the official Craft Brewery of The Boston Celtics. Jack Hendler will also lead a tasting of the beer, so grab a four-pack and get on Zoom!

·       Cape Cod Beer is celebrating St. Patrick's Day Weekend at the brewery, kicking off on Saturday, March 13. The REAL Truth About Fruit Flies in Your Taproom

Barflies.gif

Why They Happen and How to Eliminate Them:

By: Russ Thibeault

You know the deal – warm weather is your busiest time of year and your taproom is filled with thirsty customers -- and annoying fruit flies.

While it is still winter and the warm weather is (sadly) several months away, NOW is the time to create a fruit fly prevention regimen in your tap rooms! We want to help you to identify and eliminate the conducive conditions that create fruit fly problems in the first place.

Let’s begin by saying that fruit flies are a sanitation problem – not a pest control problem.

Why is this? Fruit fly larvae feed on yeasts that primarily grow in freshly decaying materials – spilled beer, food, lemons, limes, etc. This debris, once moistened, provides a perfect breeding ground for fruit flies. Clouding the issue is the fact that equipment behind the bar is often “fixed” and immovable making a DEEP cleaning virtually impossible.

Beer splashes onto the floor, sides, and legs of the equipment, etc.  Mops do not bend and hard to reach areas are often neglected creating conducive conditions when “triggered” by warm weather. Moreover, taprooms and restaurants are notorious for power-washing or putting too much water down creating pooling where larvae can flourish. When mopping at the end of each nightly service, be careful not to leave puddles of water. Standing water in the tap room or beneath hanging mops in the mop closet creates a VERY conducive environment for fruit flies.

Sanitation and fruit fly control in your taprooms can be addressed most effectively and in a “green” manner by adopting a bioremediation program utilizing probiotic cleaners. These products utilize natural, soil derived microbes to digest organic matter and eliminate odors. We love a product called InVade BioFoam Concentrate by Rockwell Labs. Just four ounces of concentrate added to a gallon of cold water in a foamer (Rockwell calls its foamer, Foamer Simpson. But any quality foamer will do) will last for months. The BioFoam includes microbes that digest fats, oils, and grease (FOG), carbohydrates, proteins, cellulose, etc. And if some of this product ends up in or near your brew house, it will NOT contaminate your beer.

At the end of each service, the foamer is utilized to spray all areas of the tap room including taps, runoff lines, equipment, floor, baseboard, soda holsters, etc. This should be performed three times per week. The best part? Simply spray and forget about it. The foamer will penetrate into areas that mops cannot reach, bringing much-needed attention to highly conducive areas including back walls and cracks in floor tiles. We at Pestex have introduced hundreds of breweries, tap rooms, bars, and restaurants to this bioremediation plan and it works beautifully. The biggest challenge is getting “buy in” by closing staff so the sooner you begin this process, the better. The BioFoam and foamer are available online or we can assist you.

A quick note about runoff lines. Be sure they are positioned at the right angle so product flows downward. Look for areas where the hose is sagging and creating a pooling effect in the line. Also, be sure to replace older and sticky drip lines often.

NOW is the time to get this started. Creating and putting into action a proactive bioremediation program during the winter will ensure your taproom customers will focus on your incredible craft brews rather than swatting at fruit flies come summer.

BFE ARCHITECTS & C.E. FLOYD CONSTRUCTION COMPETITION FOR BREWERS UPDATE

Screen Shot 2021-01-11 at 9.55.05 PM.png

Bechtel Frank Erickson Architects is currently working with Untold Brewing to help conceptualize solutions to the challenges brought on by the pandemic and the restrictions imposed upon their business. Their taproom is currently closed to patrons for on-site consumption but BFE’s goal is to provide them with a plan that allows them to safely open again.

Taylor and Jesse (BFE Architects) recently presented two schematic design options to Untold Brewing owner Matt Elder via Zoom. The first being a less invasive option which limits the disruption to brewing operations with architectural changes while creating new circulation paths and expanding their outdoor space. The second, more invasive, option proposes an exterior bar, the addition of a kitchen in an adjacent building, and the expansion of their existing patio space.

Raise A Glass - After a Decade Long Battle Massachusetts Craft Brewers Achieve Franchise Law Reform

MBG Glass Porter.jpg

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. | In the wee hours before the end of the 2020 legislative session, Massachusetts lawmakers voted to reform the state’s franchise laws.

This is a momentous occasion for Massachusetts craft brewers who since 2011 have been working to ease the historical constraints on terminating contracts with their wholesaler.

Members of the Mass Brewers Guild and the Massachusetts Wholesalers Association worked together to craft legislation Bill S.2841 which creates a new “qualified brewer” definition. This would allow any operation that produces fewer than 250,000 barrels annually a path forward to end their contract with their wholesaler. Under existing law, breweries are held in their contracts in perpetuity until they can prove “cause,” in the court of law – a long and costly process that a craft brewer would unlikely to survive. As a part of the three-tier system, wholesalers are largely responsible for distributing brewers’ products to restaurants, bars, grocery and convenience stores.

The barrelage cap will cover every craft brewery in the state apart from Boston Beer Co., makers of Samuel Adams. For the past 10-years Jim Koch, founder and head brewer of Samuel Adams, and founding member of the Mass Brewers Guild, has led the charge to change the state’s laws to give the hundreds of craft brewers in the Commonwealth the ability to grow their businesses. Wholesalers would not support the proposed legislation without exclusion of Boston Beer. In order to clear the way for the legislation to become law, Boston Beer agreed to be excluded from the benefits of the legislation that will now be enjoyed by all other Mass Brewers Guild Members.

“There is a long list of people who helped to make this ten-year effort a reality,” says Sam Hendler, co-founder of Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers and president of the Mass Brewers Guild. “More notably Senate President Spilka and House Speaker Mariano. Equally as important, we have to recognize past and present board members and members of our community who laid the groundwork of educating legislators, the countless legislators that championed our bill on Beacon Hill session after session and moved it forward, and our incredible craft beer fans who signed our petition and voiced their support on our behalf. It’s a great day for craft beer in Massachusetts.”

The state’s franchise laws were enacted in 1971 by state legislature to protect in-state distributors from large out-of-state and foreign brewers, at a time when small, independent craft brewers did not exist. As such, these laws provided un-waivable legal protections to beer distributors to protect the termination of their right to distribute a brand.

Today’s beer landscape looks much different as beer distributors have continued to grow and consolidate while hundreds of new craft breweries open each year. To date, there are  roughly 30 beer Wholesalers in Massachusetts compared to 210 craft breweries across the Commonwealth, with 20 breweries expected to open before the close of 2021, and an additional 10 breweries in planning stages.

“With the unbelievable financial pressures that have come down on our industry due to the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic, there will be breweries whose existence is saved by gaining this flexibility to control their destiny,” says Hendler. “Combined with the increasing importance of  wholesale distribution with the obvious challenges running tap rooms, we need strong relationships with our most valuable partner. This will help us get there. There’s a lot that we can accomplish together.”

The new measure now advances to Gov. Charlie Baker to sign or veto the bill, or allow it to become law without his signature.

Massachusetts will join New York, Maine, Washington and Vermont, states that have successfully reformed their franchise laws, with only an additional five states nationwide that have created an easier path to termination through legislation.

From the bottom of our beer glasses Massachusetts brewers thank the many people who helped us achieve this new state law. This herculean effort would not have been possible without the long-fought work of so many people.
